Rationale
PMC1000 Applied Pathology is an opportunity for students to further develop their knowledge of the effects of disease and injury on the human body. It builds upon the anatomy and physiology content presented in BIO1203 and provides the foundational knowledge required to understand clinical presentations in practice.
Synopsis
Pathology is the scientific study of disease processes. It encompasses knowledge of functional and structural changes in the body both at a cellular and systemic level. An understanding of aetiology, pathogenesis and morphological change that occurs as a result of a disease are presented in this course. Key aspects of pathology as required in paramedic practice are addressed.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Explain normal body processes and alterations to the body and organs caused by disease
- Demonstrate an understanding of patterns of disease processes and the body’s response to different causes of injury and illness
- Identify the pathogenesis of specific diseases and injuries
- Explain conditions that affect fluid balance, acid balance and electrolytes
- Apply knowledge of the impact of diseases on organs, systems and the body.
