Rationale

According to the World Health Organisation, public health refers to all organised measures (whether public or private) to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong life within populations. Content and activities presented in this course aims to inform students about maintaining health focusing on entire populations, as opposed to individuals and diseases. This Public Health course highlights promoting physical and mental health within communities which is a key priority among local, national and international agencies.

Synopsis

Public Health (PMC1101) will introduce concepts and data surrounding public health and provides students with an understanding of common health issues within Australia and globally. Factors influencing health and disease within various population groups and communities, as well as methods used to prevent disease will be explored and analysed throughout this course to prepare students for their role as future health professionals.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Define the terms and examine the concepts relating to health and health promotion
  2. Identify a range of health promotion frameworks and strategies to promote the health of populations
  3. Explain potential or actual Public Health issues that can impact on communities
  4. Acknowledge the importance of multidisciplinary health professionals working together to promote the health of populations
  5. Examine the impact of communities on health.

    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must attempt all assessment items and achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
