Rationale

Paramedic Skills (PMC1104) provides students with the opportunity to learn and develop beginning skills necessary for student paramedics. This course will enable students to develop a solid skill set that is required on a daily basis by paramedics. Paramedic Skills aims to introduce students to the skills and the dynamic environment that is paramedicine. Skills learned in Paramedic Skills will be consolidated and expanded on throughout the Paramedicine degree.

Synopsis

This course will provide a solid skill set that is essential to the role of paramedics. Additionally, students will understand the function and operation of standard ambulance equipment and protocols. Students will also develop safe manual handling techniques. The learning will be through a variety of skill stations and scenarios.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Develop a knowledge base and skill set in relation to the function & operation of standard ambulance equipment;
  2. Demonstrate assessment and history taking skills;
  3. Identify the needs and requirements of correct manual handling techniques;
  4. Demonstrate correct manual handling techniques;
  5. Apply universal precautions to practice;
  6. Explain the need to communicate effectively and professionally with peers and the broader health care team.

  1. Attendance requirements:
    Students must attend the mandatory laboratories or practical classes. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures and tutorials) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete each assessment item students must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 (100%) for that assessment item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade students must attend and participate in the mandatory laboratories or practical classes and achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 (100%) for each assessment item.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.

  6. Examination information:
