Rationale

Paramedic Placement 1 provides students with their first opportunity to work with an ambulance paramedic service. This Paramedic Placement 1 course gives the student the first opportunity to utilise their theoretical knowledge and practical skills learned during the first year of the Degree in Paramedicine. Students will undertake four weeks full-time practical experience with the Queensland Ambulance Service.

Synopsis

Paramedic Placement 1 will introduce students to an experience with an emergency ambulance service. During the 4 weeks the student will be able to participate in the assessment and management of patients under the supervision of a qualified paramedic. Throughout this practical placement students will be expected to actively participate professionally in the practical environment and only perform skills, procedures and tasks in line with their scope of practice and for which they have received specific authorisation.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Self-evaluate performance in a clinical situation with regard to skills and attitude
  2. Demonstrate effective communication and interact effectively with diverse age groups and cultures
  3. Participate effectively in decisions regarding the assessment, management and appropriate disposition of patients to a Year 1 level
  4. Demonstrate the ability to appropriately use standard ambulance equipment
  5. Apply evidence-based practice to the clinical management of patients in an ambulance environment
  6. Demonstrate ethical and professional behaviour in an ambulance environment.

Uniform and PPE requirements: Failure to have the approved uniform and PPE during a placement shift may result in exclusion from the practical placement until the requirements are complied with. Students must also carry their university identification with them at all times.

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students鈥� responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete each of the assessment items a student must receive 100% of the marks (mark of 1 out of 1).

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must attempt and receive 100% (mark of 1) for each of the assessment items in the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a failing grade or an incomplete grade.

  6. Examination information:
    There is no examination in this course.
