Rationale

Paramedic Placement 2 provides students with their second block of four weeks full-time practical experience with the Queensland Ambulance Service. Students will work as the third officer on an emergency ambulance vehicle and will be expected to perform as a functional team member under the instruction of the ambulance crew. Students will be expected to demonstrate a higher level of knowledge and skills as compared to Paramedic Placement 1 (PMC1303) as they will have undertaken further study in the interim period.

Synopsis

The second practical placement of 163 hours provides the students with the opportunity to perform as a functional member of a paramedic team under the supervision of a qualified paramedic. The student should incorporate their increased knowledge and skills by contributing to assessment and management of patients who present with cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, as well as the general assessment of other patients.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Evaluate own performance in a practical situation with regard to skills and attitude
  2. Demonstrate effective communication skills and the ability to interact with people from diverse age groups and cultures including team members
  3. Demonstrate active participate in decision making regarding the assessment and management appropriate to Year 2 student
  4. Assess and appropriately manage individuals presenting with cardiovascular, respiratory, and behavioural conditions
  5. Apply evidence-based practice to the manage individuals in an ambulance environment or pre-hospital setting
  6. Demonstrate ethical and professional behaviour in an ambulance environment.

    It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve 100% of the marks (mark of 1) for that item.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must attempt and receive 100% (mark of 1) for all assessment items in the course.

    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a failing grade or an incomplete grade.
