Rationale
This course addresses contemporary healthcare issues that are reflective of the population including children, the ageing population and the epidemic of obesity. Obesity is a major concern among the young, middle age and older population causing morbidly and significant complications requiring attendance by ambulance services. Ageing and obesity are associated with higher rates of chronic illnesses, co-morbidities and use of health services in general.
Synopsis
This course will build on all the content addressed throughout this program and requires students to apply knowledge and principles to three specific health subsets within current populations. Although the principles of assessment, diagnosis and management remain the same, they are applied differently in relation to children, the elderly and obese based on their specific developmental, physiological, pathological and psychosocial requirements.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Examine anatomical, physiological, pathological and psychological characteristics specific to paediatric, geriatric and bariatric people.
- Apply the principles of history taking, physical examination and clinical reasoning to the assessment and diagnosis of specific conditions in paediatric, geriatric and bariatric people.
- Examine strategies to effectively communicate with paediatric, geriatric and/or bariatric people, their carers and/or guardians, and with other health professionals who could be involved with their care.
- Evaluate clinical reasoning frameworks and develop management plans for paediatric, geriatric and bariatric patients.
- Demonstrate evidence-based practice aligned to the practical management of paediatric, bariatric and geriatric patients in a variety of clinical scenarios.
