Other requisites

Students must successfully complete this course before enrolling in PSG4900; students cannot enrol in PSG3900 and PSG4900 in the same semester. Students commencing their final-year project (PSG4111) should take this course in the preceding year.

Rationale

This is the first of two courses which address the practice of professional surveying, planning and professional spatial science. The course is concerned largely with non-technical matters, independent of the specific disciplines, which involve the particular work undertaken, performance and responsibilities borne by the professional surveyor, planner and spatial scientist. The major manifestations of this professional practice is the participation in professional development activities and the planning, execution and reporting of project work.

Synopsis

A major portion of this course is directed at the preparation for the commencement of your final year PSG4111 Research Project A & PSG4112 Research Project B. This preparation includes consulting with supervising staff, a lecture and attendance at the annual "Project Conference" in which PSG4900 Professional Week 2 students present their completed project work to other students, staff and members of various professions.

This course contains a mandatory residential school for external students.

Objectives

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Reflect on professional skills with a view to the final year project; identify needs for improvement, and plan activities to attain these skills;
  2. Find information using a range of search tools and facilities; critically analyse, evaluate and reference the information including published research articles and other information sources;
  3. Show initiative to by establishing contact and communicate effectively with supervisory, technical and administrative staff;
  4. Explain the importance and role of a professional conference; evaluate and critique conference presentations of peers and provide constructive feedback;

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    External and on-campus students must attend the mandatory residential school. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete each assessment item students must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for that assessment item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade students must attend and participate in the mandatory residential school and achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for each assessment item.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade, under the requirements in 4 above, will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.

  3. As part of the mandatory residential school, students may be expected to undertake a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratories, practical classes and assessment as advised by the course examiner.

  4. This is a communication benchmark course and a major component of the assessment of this course will be associated with the demonstration of communication skills.

  5. A minimum standard of communication skills must be demonstrated in order for a passing grade to be awarded.

  6. A student will not normally undertake this course until their last four (4) semesters of the degree course AND is commencing or expecting to commence final-level project work (PSG4111 Research Project Part 1) in the following academic year

  7. Participation in the Project Conference is preparatory to, and additional to, presentation of a paper at this conference in the following year.
