Pre-requisite: (PSG3900 or ENG3902) and Students must be enrolled in one of the following Programs: BSPS or BSPH or BURP. Students cannot enrol in PSG3900 and PSG4900 in the same semester.

Rationale

This is the second of two courses which address the work undertaken, the performance required and responsibilities borne by the practices of professional surveying, planning and spatial science. As the final residential school in the Bachelor of Spatial Science and Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning, this course is particularly concerned with interaction with the professions at large. It is also concerned with developing an awareness of professional ethics.

Synopsis

A major part of all surveying, planning and spatial science project work is the appropriate communication of the outcome. This course provides guidance and experience in both verbal (seminar) and written reporting skills and is undertaken to complement the courses PSG4111 Research Project A and PSG4112 Research Project B in the final year of the degree. The presentation of a major seminar on the work undertaken during the final year project is a requirement for the completion of this course.

This course contains a mandatory residential school for external students.

Objectives

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. prepare, to a professional standard, a written extended abstract, having good structure and format, high standards of spelling, grammar and punctuation, and appropriate and adequate technical content;
  2. plan, prepare and deliver a verbal presentation in English, to a professional standard, on their own academic work, making effective use of presentation aids, in a professional forum;
  3. present, defend and debate technical information, based on their own final year project;
  4. critique work and critically analyse the work of peers; provide constructive feedback;
  5. recognise and debate the strengths and limitations of the academic component of the education of a professional planner, surveyor or spatial scientist;
  6. reflect on the need for a period of professional formation.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    External and on-campus students must attend the mandatory residential school. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete each assessment item students must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for that assessment item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade students must attend and participate in the mandatory residential school and achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for each assessment item.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade, under the requirements in 4 above, will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.

  4. This is a communication benchmark course and a major component of the assessment of this course will be associated with the demonstration of communication skills.

  1. A student will not normally undertake this course until he/she is in the last two (2) semesters of the degree program, has completed the pre-requisite course PSG3900 Professional Week 1 AND is enrolled in courses PSG4111 Research Project Part 1 & PSG4112 Research Project Part 2.

  2. Students must refer to their results detailed in UConnect if they were awarded a grade other than pass. Details of the requirements to upgrade to a pass grade will be listed at that location.
