Rationale

Social psychology is a branch of psychology dedicated to the study of how people think about, influence and relate to each other. This course introduces students to the scientific study of social behaviour and provides an understanding of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives and research methods in social psychology. This understanding of human social behaviour must be considered by researchers and practitioners in all areas of psychology.

Synopsis

Social psychology is introduced as the study of social behaviour at multiple levels from individual processes through to community-level social phenomena. Basic concepts of social psychology are introduced (e.g., socialisation, self-esteem, altruism, aggression, attitudes, communication, interpersonal relationships, prejudice, group processes, cultural issues, leadership and social influence). Applied skills relevant to assessment and research relevant to this field of psychology are also covered (e.g., assessing different kinds of evidence and applying theory to social problems). Students will also require email and internet access to USQConnect for this course.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. identify major theories relating to social processes of behaviour at the level of individuals, groups and communities
  2. explain the effects of social influences on individuals and groups across a variety of social settings
  3. reflect on one’s own beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours in regard to social phenomena
  4. think critically about social behaviour and assess different kinds of evidence used to analyse social phenomena
  5. apply social psychological theories to particular social problems with a view to understanding the impacts and antecedents of those issues at the level of individuals, groups and communities.

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures and tutorials) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.   2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2020 are: To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

    Requirements after S1 2020:
    To satisfactorily complete an assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks. Students do not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to be awarded a passing grade in this course. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2020 are: To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    Requirements after S1 2020:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle). Note that the Conceded Pass is not available in this course due to APAC accreditation.

    Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.

    To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2).

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2020 are: An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination.

    Requirements after S1 2020:
    In a Restricted Examination, candidates are allowed access to specific materials during the examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination); Students whose first language is not English, may take an appropriate unmarked non-electronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.

Assessment notes

  1. Students who do not qualify for a Passing grade may, at the discretion of the Examiner, be assigned additional work to demonstrate to the Examiner that they have achieved the required standard. It is expected that such students will have gained at least 45% of the total marks available for all summative assessment items.

  2. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This must be produced within 24 hours if required by the Examiner.

  3. The examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.

  4. The Faculty will NOT accept submission of assignments by facsimile.

  5. Students who, for medical, family/personal, or employment-related reasons, are unable to complete an assignment or to sit for an examination at the scheduled time may apply to defer an assessment in a course. Such a request must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation. One of the following temporary grades may be awarded IDS (Incomplete - Deferred Examination; IDM (Incomplete Deferred Make-up); IDB (Incomplete - Both Deferred Examination and Deferred Make-up).

  6. Reliable access to the internet is a requirement of this course as the course contains electronic assessment such as conducting a literature search via the USQ library website and submission elements. In order to avoid internet issues, on-campus students should upload their assignments electronically using the on-campus computer laboratories. Online students who knowingly do not have reliable access to the internet should actively seek alternative internet access (e.g., Internet cafes, local libraries, or work places) for assessment submission. Online students are able to use the on-campus student computer laboratories once access has been enabled. To be granted access, online students need to contact ICT and ask to have a student account enabled so that they can work on-campus. This needs to be requested at least one week before access is required.

  7. APA style is the referencing system required in this course. Students should use the 6th or 7th edition of the APA Style Manual to format their assignments. The APA Style to be used is defined by the USQ Library's referencing guide.
