Rationale

Sport and physical activity is a complex and intriguing socio-cultural phenomenon in contemporary society. The application of psychological theory, research, and practice to sport and exercise settings can contribute greatly to an individual's performance and level of participation. This course seeks to provide a solid scientific foundation for further study of the practice of sport and exercise psychology.

Synopsis

This course will explore the contribution of psychology in sport and exercise settings by highlighting and encouraging discussion of relevant issues. Through this process, students will develop greater awareness of the knowledge base, key skills, and professional responsibilities demanded of psychologists and researchers working in the field of sport and exercise psychology.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Describe the theories, major data, and methods of inquiry related to the social, emotional, and cognitive basis of behaviour in sport and physical activity contexts;
  2. Distinguish the major methods of investigation, interventions, and techniques of measurement that relate to sport and exercise psychology;
  3. Apply psychological knowledge to sport and exercise psychology problems so to define a problem, gather and evaluate relevant data, and determine appropriate intervention strategies to resolve the problem.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    it is the student's responsibility to attend and participate in all learning activities (i.e., live/recorded classes, Blackboard collaborate web conferences, Online study guide, Moodle discussions and activities on the course studydesk, tutorials and practical work) scheduled for them. It is the student's responsibility to study all assessable materials in order to maximize their chance of meeting the objectives of the course. It is the student's responsibility to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S2 2020 are:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

    Requirements after S2 2020:
    To satisfactorily complete an assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks available. Students do not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to be awarded a passing grade in this course. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course.



  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S2 2020 are:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    Requirements after S2 2020:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle). Note that the Conceded Pass is not available in this course due to APAC accreditation standard 2.1.9.

    Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.

    To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2).



  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks/grades obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S2 2020 are:
    An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination

    Requirements after S2 2020:
    Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination); calculators cannot be used during the examination. Students whose first language is not English, may, take an appropriate unmarked non-electronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.



  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:

Assessment notes

  1. Reliable access to the internet is an essential requirement of this course as the course contains electronic assessment and submission elements. In order to avoid internet issues, students who knowingly do not have reliable access to the internet should actively seek alternative internet access (e.g., Internet cafes, local libraries, or work places) for assessment completion and submission. External students are able to use the on-campus student computer laboratories once access has been enabled. To be granted access, external students need to contact ICT and ask to have a student account enabled so that they can work on-campus. This needs to be requested at least one week before access is required.

  2. A Moodle discussion group will be set up on the PSY3250 精东传媒appdeskt and students are expected to participate on a weekly basis. Students are free to discuss any issues arising from the course. Additionally, students are to attempt to respond to the issues raised by others as well as raise their own thoughts and/or questions

  3. Assignment 1 must be submitted electronically via the PSY3250 精东传媒appdesk. Refer to the assessment instructions for correct labelling of electronic files and electronic submission details. Times and dates refer to Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).

  4. In the event that a due date for an assignment falls on a local public holiday in their area, such as a Show holiday, the due date for the assignment will be the next day. Students are to note on the assignment cover the date of the public holiday for the Examiner's convenience.

  5. In accordance with 精东传媒app Policy, the Examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.

  6. In order to maximize their chances of meeting the objectives of the course, students should submit the assessment and complete the final exam.

  7. The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must submit the assignment to USQ.

  8. Students may be required to provide a second copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be dispatched to the USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request to do so.

  9. Students who, for medical, family/personal, or employment-related reasons, are unable to complete an assignment or to sit for an examination at the scheduled time may apply to defer an assessment in a course. Such a request must be accompanied appropriate supporting documentation. One of the following temporary grades may be awarded IDS (Incomplete - Deferred Examination; IDM (Incomplete Deferred Make-up); IDB (Incomplete - Both Deferred Examination and Deferred Make-up).

  10. APA style is the referencing system required in this course. Students should use the 6th or 7th edition of the APA Style Manual to format their assignments. The APA Style to be used is defined by the USQ Library's referencing guide.
