Rationale
This course exists to satisfy the need for some flexibility in several programs to cater for the widely varying interests and chosen specialisations of students. It will provide a capstone experience for students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate of Science (Psychology in Schools). Participation in this course can assist in preparing students for job-related research and/or further post-graduate studies.
Synopsis
This course provides the opportunity for a student to pursue an area of study that will complement the other studies in the student's program. Typically, the course will consist of a specialised investigation extending the application of knowledge and skills in a certain area. This could involve, for example, a directed readings program, a replication or extension of a research project, or some other approved activity that would complement the student's program of study.
This course contains a mandatory residential school.
Objectives
On successful completeion of this course, students should be able to:
- Create a new scholarly or original research work by generating, planning, and producing a specialised investigation under supervision and with guidance;
- Evaluate their own skills and attributes for independent professional work by checking and critiquing their use of critical thinking, communication, personal/social, creative-thinking, collaboration/teamwork, and ICT skills to create the new or original work; and
- Analyse the connection between factual, conceptual, procedural, and metacognitive knowledge to create the new or original work by differentiating, organising, and attributing the types of knowledge needed to accomplish it.

Attendance requirements:
Graduate Certificate of Science (Psychology in Schools) students are to attend a two-day residential school that is mandatory for this course. It is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course, and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
Students have to satisfactorily complete the residential school assessment item. Students do not have to satisfactorily complete each of the other assessment items to be awarded a passing grade in the course. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course. -

Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4) -
Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade, students must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e., the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (i.e., the Residential School Attendance and Participation) by achieving a mark of 1 out of 1 for that assessment item.
Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks. Unless the fail is for the residential school when no supplementary can be offered as it is a proficiency hurdle.
To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4) -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
Final grades for students will be determined by the addition of the marks obtained in each assessment item, weighted as in the Assessment details and by considering the student鈥檚 level of achievement of the objectives of the course. -
