Rationale

The scientist-practitioner model of professional practice in psychology has broad consensual acceptance within the profession. It follows that students must be able to produce a candidature document outlining the PhD thesis. The document should clearly outline the application of theory in a selected area, methodology and where possible a pilot study of the thesis. This course gives them the opportunity to do so in a supervised, learning environment.

Synopsis

This is the second course that contributes to the Psychology Doctoral Project. At completion of this course the student shall have submitted a 20 page document and presentation in line with candidature.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students will be able to demonstrate competencies in critically reviewing literature and competently designing research projects to address theoretical and practical questions and issues in the field, as identified in the APS Competencies for Psychologists (2013). Students will be able to:

  1. synthesise literature relating to their topic
  2. conduct the initial phase of research (e.g., a pilot study, systematic review, initial interviews)
  3. present research in oral and written form
  4. present research that is considered at the point of candidature as per a PhD.
