Rationale
Candidates undertaking lab based research should enrol in this course for each semester of their candidature when 1 unit of enrolment is required.
Lab areas include: Engineering and Built Environment, Health and Community (with sub-areas of Biomedical and Laboratory Medicine, and, Psychology), Sciences (all sub-areas except Applied Data Science, Mathematics and Statistics).
Synopsis
This course is part of a supervised research project which provides opportunities for motivated and highly qualified students to undertake advanced study and to produce a research-based thesis. Students develop the appropriate research skills and specialist knowledge which will enhance their career prospects or allow them to undertake further studies. The emphasis of the program is on developing the appropriate knowledge and skills to undertake independent research and professional practice.
Objectives
On completion of this course students should be able to:
- Investigate a substantial, complex and relevant area of research with specialised research skills that enable them to advance their discipline.
- Critically evaluate relevant research literature, theoretical propositions, methodologies and findings to design and conduct original research.
- Cogently present, verbally and in writing research findings which include propositions, creative works, insights and conclusions to their peers and professional community.
- Independently and systematically apply specialised technical and research skills to plan and execute a research project, undertake research ethically according to the discipline standards and generate new knowledge and original insights that make a contribution to their discipline.
- Apply principles of integrity, research ethics, judgement, adaptability and responsibility in ways appropriate to an expert in their discipline.

Attendance requirements:
There is no attendance requirement for this course. However it is the student鈥檚 responsibility to attend regular meetings with the supervisory team to discuss their research progress. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
Progress Reports: to complete the Progress Report satisfactorily, students must fill out the Progress Report in consultation with their supervisor and submit it to the relevant faculty research office. As part of their research program, students are expected to demonstrate satisfactory progress.

Thesis: To successfully complete a thesis, students must receive have satisfactorily addressed the requested revisions to receive a passing grade. -

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
Progress Report: HDR students must submit a progress report and deemed to be making Satisfactory Progress by the supervisor and AD(RRT) to receive a SP grade.
OR
Thesis: At the end of the candidature students are required to submit a thesis for examination. Student must then satisfactorily address the examiners feedback to receive a passing grade for the degree to be awarded. -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade. -
