Rationale

This course is part of a supervised research project which provides opportunities for motivated and highly qualified students to undertake Doctoral research and to produce a research-based thesis. Students develop the appropriate research skills and specialist knowledge which will enhance their career prospects or allow them to undertake further studies. The emphasis of the programme is on developing the appropriate knowledge and skills to undertake independent research and professional practice.

Synopsis

Candidates in Doctor of Philosophy (DPHD) will undertake studies on their research project in consultation with their Project Supervisors. The Research Proposal is developed in this course as part of the confirmation of candidature in the DPHD program. Admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (DPHD) program is normally provisional until the student successfully completes the Confirmation of Candidature process. The following areas will normally be addressed in the Confirmation Proposal:

1. aims and objectives of the research;
2. review of the relevant literature;
3. proposed contribution to the field of research;
4. details of the proposed research methods, including analysis of data;
5. draft research ethics application, if appropriate;
6. milestones and timelines;
7. resources required to complete the research; and
8. an indication of the type of Thesis expected to be submitted (e.g. Standard Thesis, Thesis by Publication, Thesis with Creative Works component).

Objectives

On completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. identify suitable topics for their research project that meets the learning objectives of the program.
  2. undertake independent research and develop a supporting literature review for their confirmation proposal.
  3. identify resources required for their project and if appropriate, gain ethical clearance
  4. report research outcomes by scoping and confirming a research gap that is addressed by their proposed thesis project.
  5. demonstrate appropriate communication skills to deliver a detailed seminar and written confirmation proposal for their project.

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the student’s responsibility to attend regular meetings with the supervisory team to discuss their research progress.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete the confirmation seminar and written proposal satisfactorily, students must submit the proposal and deliver a seminar (addressing the requirements of the marking scheme and guidelines provided) to the Confirmation of Candidature review panel for assessment.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    Confirmation Proposal: HDR students must submit a written proposal and present a seminar deemed to be making Satisfactory Progress by the supervisor/s, assessment panel and Associate Dean (Research and Research Training) to receive a passing grade. A candidate must receive a passing grade in this course to be confirmed in the program.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade, under the requirements in 4 above, will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an incomplete grade.

  6. Examination information:

    There is no examination in this course, there will be no deferred or supplementary examinations.

  1.
