Rationale

This course exists to satisfy a need for flexibility within programs in order to cater for the widely varying interests and chosen specialisations of students. Some students taking this course in the online mode, depending on their negotiated studies/assessment, may have attendance requirements.

Synopsis

This course provides the opportunity for a student to pursue an area of study which will complement the other studies in their program. Typically the course will consist of specialised investigations extending knowledge and skills in a certain area. The studies could involve, for example, a directed reading course, an extension to a project (where appropriate), or some other approved activity which would complement the student's studies. The area of study chosen will be assigned after consultation with the examiner and a staff member with expertise in the area concerned. To fulfil entry requirements into the course, students must provide the course examiner with a satisfactory study plan, endorsed by the appropriate staff member, by the end of week 1 of the semester in which they are taking the course.

    The complementary study area chosen will be assigned after consultation with the examiner and the appropriate Program Coordinator. It is the students' responsibility to participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Some students taking this course in the online mode, depending on their negotiated studies/assessment, may have attendance requirements.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:

Assessment notes

  1. The supervisor will advise the student and the examiner of the details of the study and the assessment program in writing by the end of week 3 of the semester as in TOPICS above.

  2. Assessment for the course will vary according to the nature of the study undertaken by each student. By the end of the third week of semester, the supervisor will provide the course examiner, for approval (i) an outline of the study (ii) the objectives of the study (iii) the format, timing and weighting of the assessment items for the study (iv) a statement about attendance requirements (v) requirements of students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily (vi) penalties for late submission of required work (vii) requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course (viii) the method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade (ix) examination information (xi) any other requirements deemed necessary by the examiner.
