Rationale

This course is part of a supervised research project which provides opportunities for motivated and highly qualified students to undertake advanced study and to produce a research-based thesis. Students develop the appropriate research skills and specialist knowledge which will enhance their career prospects or allow them to undertake further studies. The emphasis of the programme is on developing the appropriate knowledge and skills to undertake independent research and professional practice.

Synopsis

Full-time candidates in the Master of Science (Research) Psychology Stream (MSCR) should enrol in this course in the first semester of their program. The subject of their Research Project will be decided in consultation with their Project Supervisors. The Research Proposal is developed in this course as part of the confirmation of candidature in the MSCR program. This course contains a recommended residential school.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. deliver a detailed seminar and written confirmation proposal for their project
  2. if appropriate, gain ethical clearance for their project
  3. identify suitable research topics
  4. undertake independent research
  5. demonstrate appropriate communication skills
  6. report research outcomes.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    For students enrolled in MSCR (Research) Psychology Stream: Students taking this course in S1 may wish to attend the two, one-day residential schools associated with PSY4101. Residential schools may be held in Toowoomba or Ipswich depending on student numbers. It is the student’s responsibility to attend regular meetings with the supervisory team to discuss their research. Students taking this course in either S1 or S2 are encouraged to contact the Examiner for PSY4101 to gain access to the course ¾«¶«´«Ã½appdesk.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    Progress Reports: to complete the Progress Report satisfactorily, students must fill out the report in consultation with their supervisor. As part of their research program, students are expected to demonstrate satisfactory progress. To complete the confirmation seminar and written proposal satisfactorily, students must submit the proposal and deliver a seminar (addressing the requirements of the marking scheme and guidelines provided) to the MSCR review panel for assessment.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    Progress Report: HDR students must submit a progress report and deemed to be making Satisfactory Progress by the supervisor and ADR to receive a SP grade. Confirmation Proposal: HDR students must submit a written proposal and present a seminar deemed to be making Satisfactory Progress by the supervisor/s, assessment panel and ADR to receive a SP grade. The course will be graded. To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks (or grades) obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    There is no examination for this course.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    There will be no Deferred or Supplementary examinations in this course.

Assessment notes

  1. The confirmation proposal will follow standard USQ guidelines.

  2. The written confirmation proposal and confirmation seminar in this course will normally be marked by a panel of reviewers.

  3. Completion of the final course in the Master of Science (Research) program is by thesis examination.

  4. In the absence of an approved alternative (such as APA for Psychology students), students should use the Harvard (AGPS) as the default referencing style in their assignments to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. The Harvard (AGPS) style to be used is defined by the USQ Library's referencing guide. Students may be granted permission to use an alternative system at the time at which the project is approved.
