Rationale

This course is a requirement for professional accreditation with Exercise and Sports Science Australia for clinical exercise physiology. This course is the second clinical placement for exercise physiology students and builds on from knowledge and skills acquired in SES 4199. During this course students will complete 180 hours of professional placement

Note that some professional placement will be required on campus at Ipswich, and some professional placement may be undertaken at other sites, which may be a considerable distance from any USQ campus. All students will be required to complete placements at more than one location.

Synopsis

This course will provide students with an opportunity to undertake 180 hours of clinical professional work experience within the clinical exercise physiology scope of practice. Every student's work experience will be supervised by either an Exercise and Sport Science Australia Accredited Exercise Physiologist, a university-trained allied health professional (e.g. registered physiotherapist) or an exercise scientist with appropriate experience working with clients with chronic disease. Clinical work experience is intended to provide students with opportunities to develop skills and knowledge in clinical exercise physiology to enhance their professional development and potential ability.

Important assessment information

1. Attendance requirements:
   
   Students will need to attend clinical placement for this course, including practicum simulation modules, for this course. Note that some professional placement will be required on campus at Ipswich, and some professional placement may be undertaken at other sites, which may be a considerable distance from any USQ campus. All students will be required to complete placements at more than one location. It is the student鈥檚 responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their change of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
   
   
2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
   
   To complete the clinical experience satisfactorily, students must demonstrate that they have completed the required placement hours and fully completed the Professional Practice Logbook (comprising clinical log and supervisors鈥� reports). Students must also attempt and pass an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) covering 4 pathology domains of clinical exercise physiology practice: neurological, cancer, mental health, and renal disease.

4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
   
   To be assured of a pass in this course students must attend placement, including the simulated practicum modules, fully and satisfactorily complete the Professional Practice Logbook, and achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the OCSE by obtaining an 鈥渁t standard鈥� or better grading on each domain of the OSCE.
   
   
5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
   
   As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.
   
   
6. Examination information:
   
   Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE): An OSCE covering 4 domains of clinical exercise practice will be conducted at the conclusion of this course. The OSCE will comprise 4 stations, each including a brief clinical vignette, from which the student will be instructed to demonstrate some clinical tasks, working with a trained model as a 鈥減atient鈥�. Each station will be assessed by a single examiner. Students must perform satisfactorily (鈥渁t standard鈥�) in all 4 stations to pass the exam, as well as obtaining an overall grade of at least 50% for the exam.
   
   
7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
   
   OSCE examinations will be held at the conclusion of Semester 2. Deferred / Supplementary examinations for SES4299 will be held during Semester 3. There is no examination in this course, there will be no deferred or supplementary examinations.

2. Students can expect that questions in assessment items in this course may draw upon knowledge and skills that they can reasonably be expected to have acquired before enrolling in this course. This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills. Students who do not possess such knowledge and skills should not expect the same grades as those students who do possess them.
   
   
3. a. Students must complete the requirements of this course outlined in the Clinical Exercise Physiology Professional Placement Handbook before undertaking professional placement.
   b. The 180 hours of professional experience must be gained in the area of clinical exercise physiology.
   c. In the total of 500 hours of clinical professional practice in the program, it is expected that there be a minimum of 60% of time for face-to-face delivery, maximum of 35% of preparation for exercise service delivery and maximum of 5% of administration duties.
   d. Supervisors of the clinical professional practice are required to meet certain qualification and related experience guidelines. Supervisors will be required to counter-sign students鈥� Professional Practice Logbooks and complete a report for each student supervised.
   e. Professional Practice Logbooks and all associated reports are to be submitted within two months of the last day of completion of any clinical professional placement at a given site.
   f. All clinical professional placements are subject to the approval the Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology program coordinator. Students will be allocated to clinical professional placement sites. No payment may be received for the clinical professional placement. Clinical professional placement will be organised around other course requirements in the program, andis not sufficient grounds for seeking assessment extensions.
   g. To cover all eventualities it will be expected that all students obtain a suitability card or equivalent in each state within three months of commencing the BCEP program and before any clinical professional placement. State Law in Queensland (Australia) requires that all adults working/undertaking clinical professional experience/researching with children under the age of 18, in the state Queensland are required to possess a current suitability card (Blue Card).
   h. All students must obtain CPR and first aid certification prior to any clinical professional placement. For placements within Queensland Health additional requirements, including vaccinations, may apply.
   
   
4. Practicum simulation modules will be conducted on campus at Ipswich. Attendance is mandatory, with the benchmark for satisfactory attendance set at 80%.
