Rationale

This course offers students the opportunity of an introduction to practice in educational drama so that students may apply delivery workshops and reflecting upon how drama is used as a pedagogic tool.

Synopsis

Explorations into drama and theatre practice in education will also cover drama pedagogy, drama as art, drama as research, drama across the curriculum, and interrogations of the fields of children's theatre and theatre-in-education.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. apply theory to their practice as part of creation, rehearsal and problem-solving required of an artist in children’s theatre and theatre-in-education (TLO 3);
  2. interpret and represent plays/performances through the use of dramaturgy that is appropriate for children’s and youth theatre audiences (TLO 4);
  3. collaboratively plan and organise activities required for drama and theatre-in-education, critical pedagogy, children’s theatre and drama workshops (TLO 5);
  4. work independently on set tasks and demonstrate the capacity for self-reflection (TLO 5);
  5. use research as the basis for the development and evaluation of activities required for children’s/youth theatre and theatre-in-education (TLO 2);
  6. distinguish and examine socio-cultural and ethical issues within children’s and youth theatre plays (TLO 6).

    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks.

    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course

    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
