Airline, airport and other aviation operations are complex socio-technical systems which require specialised knowledge in a range of operational areas. These operational units are highly interdependent and rely on their effectiveness to maintain both efficiency and safety across the operation. It is therefore important to provide students with in-depth knowledge of operations across the aviation system which will enable them to be effective participants and leaders in their chosen aviation specialisation.

This course provides aviation practitioners with the opportunity to explore a diverse range of operations specialisations within the aviation system and their own professional environment, from the perspective of their current and anticipated role(s). Participants will reflect on the various operational components of the industry and apply this reflective knowledge in a manner that will elucidate high level managerial expertise.

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

1. explore in depth the nature of aviation operations as a complex socio-technical system, including the regulatory environment they operate within;
2. critically appraise typical airline structures across a wide variety of airline sizes and complexities;
3. describe the various operational functions within a large airline flight operations centre;
4. assess the functional differences between different facets of airline engineering and maintenance support operations;
5. compare the nature and function of different elements within an airline鈥檚 ground support system;
6. communicate in writing the relevant common elements of functional operations units across a range of non-airline operations, within the aviation system.
