Overview
This course is the first of four pathology clinical placement courses written for students seeking a career as medical laboratory scientists and is designed to extend the academic learning environment by linking into the professional world. This introductory course allows students to experience the day-to-day procedures involved in the collection and processing of patient specimens for laboratory analysis. Students undertaking this clinical placement will gain organisational and time management skills as they observe and participate in the routine workflow of a pre-analytical pathology department.
The assessment in this course is competency-based. Students will achieve either a pass or fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course. These competency items form part of the UniSQ accreditation agreement with the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS).
This course provides students with an introduction to pre-analytical pathology; specimen collection and processing, and precedes further clinical placements in the various analytical disciplines of clinical pathology. This course gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge of pre-analytical pathology to a real-life situation in preparation for future employment in a clinical pathology laboratory. This course enhances student learning through the application of their theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting within a supportive professional team environment. This practical experience will encourage a reflective approach to the development of the students' workplace skills and enhance their understanding of work health and safety and professional conduct. This course will also provide students with the opportunity to make valuable professional connections with laboratory supervisors and staff that could enhance their future employment prospects.
Students intending to enrol in this course should communicate with the professional placement office well in advance of the first week of the semester so that the process of arranging a suitable placement with a pathology provider can begin. The course is offered in S2.
The normal workload for this course is attendance of 13 days per semester. The details of the clinical placement are negotiated by the professional placements officer to suit the student's requirements and the pathology provider's capacity to accommodate the student.
1. Pathology Clinical placements
Pathology clinical placements are an integral component of the Bachelor of Health (Medical Laboratory Science) program. The Pathology Clinical Placements enable students to gain practical experience in a workplace setting. However, as this is a clinical workplace setting students must be aware of the privacy and confidentiality issues that are associated with working in such an environment. Students undertaking pathology clinical placements must undertake Queensland Health Orientation training and sign deeds relating to placement requirements and privacy. The Students will be provided with a comprehensive clinical placements guide upon enrolment in this course.
Course learning outcomes
On completion of this course students should be able to:
- demonstrate enhanced understanding of pre-analytical pathology and make positive contributions to workflow in the clinical pathology laboratory;
- develop and demonstrate organisational and time-management skills which will enable them to make a positive contribution to the goals of the organisation;
- develop and demonstrate an ability to work independently and collaboratively as an effective member of a professional team;
- illustrate a reflective approach to professional development and enhanced written and verbal workplace communication skills;
- employ safe work practices, follow laboratory protocols regarding patient confidentiality and demonstrate an understanding of the professional and ethical responsibilities associated with working in a pathology laboratory.

Student workload expectations
To do well in this subject, students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week including class contact hours, independent study, and all assessment tasks. If you are undertaking additional activities, which may include placements and residential schools, the weekly workload hours may vary.
