Teacher professional accreditation demands that secondary teaching graduates have a strong professional knowledge of discipline-specific curriculum and pedagogical studies within their chosen teaching areas. Although there are some common pedagogical approaches across clusters of disciplines, there are also distinctive practices within specific disciplines. This course enables preservice teachers to develop specific knowledges and pedagogical understandings within the English discipline.

The course begins with preservice teachers exploring specific structures and knowledges related to their teaching area. Building on this, they will then actively construct their own pedagogical practice and develop professional expertise in delivering discipline-specific teaching for learning. The purpose of this course is to move beyond generic approaches of teaching for learning to provide a deep understanding of how to teach in the English discipline. This course provides the opportunity for preservice teachers to learn how English content, pedagogy and curriculum fit and work together to provide effective learning opportunities.

On successful completion of this course preservice teachers should be able to:

1. demonstrate an understanding of content selection and a wide range of teaching strategies to identify misconceptions in the English discipline;
2. demonstrate an ability to identify discipline skills, attitudes, values, and code of conduct in the English discipline;
3. demonstrate differentiated teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities in the English discipline;
4. demonstrate the ability to select, create and use relevant resources (including ICTs) in the English discipline;
5. demonstrate an understanding of providing feedback, assessment and reporting on student achievement and apply well-developed judgement to student work in the English discipline;
6. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of literacy and numeracy teaching strategies and their application in the English discipline;
7. demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of maintaining student safety and compliance with legislative requirements in a range of contexts relevant for the English discipline;
8. engage with colleagues, professional teaching networks and broader communities to improve student learning in the English discipline;
9. demonstrate competence in and appropriate use of language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and bibliographic referencing.
