Overview
Student language proficiency levels need to be benchmarked to internationally recognised and accredited English proficiency scales. This course develops students' capacity to prepare for and complete an online test of academic English, benchmarked to either a score of at least 73 on the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) or the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C1+ level, to enable students to prepare to meet future registration requirements of a range of professional disciplines.
In this course, activities in English have been organised to develop students' capacity to integrate academic reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in an online test of academic English. In this course, special focus is given to developing the precision and efficiency of a students' English language skills to a near native-like level through emphasis on grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, and coherence and cohesion.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students will:
- Communicate with fluency and spontaneity with minimal searching for expressions in an online English language test at a near native-like level, benchmarked to at least 73 on the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) and at the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C1+ level.
- Comprehend a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognize implicit meaning in an online English language test, at a near native-like level at a near native-like level, benchmarked to at least 73 on the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C1+ level.
- Apply language flexibly and effectively for a wide range of purposes and with a wide range of topics in an online English language test at a near native-like level, benchmarked to at least 73 on the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C1+ level.
- Produce clear, well structured, and detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors, and cohesive devices, in an online English language test at a near native-like level, benchmarked to at least 73 on the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C1+ level.
- Apply test taking strategies to complete both communicative and enabling skills test tasks in an online English language test at a near native-like level, benchmarked to at least 73 on the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C1+ level.
