Overview

The growing capability of the Internet, World Wide Web and Geographic Information System (GIS) has created a demand for Web based applications of GIS. This course focuses on the conceptual and practical aspects of developing Web based GIS applications.

The course covers the fundamental concepts and principles of Web based GIS. It deals with the theories and principles behind Web based GIS development including Web mapping services, distributed (cloud) systems and client/server computing, Web interface design, networking fundamentals, geographic mark-up language, service and security in Web based GIS, Web mapping software and Web based GIS applications including voluntary geographic information.

Course learning outcomes

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. discuss the evolution and current state of Web GIS, including mapping concepts, client/server computing, system architecture, and web map elements;
  2. demonstrate an understanding of the types and functions of geospatial web services, including aspects of interoperability and standards;
  3. perform selected programming tasks, such as the use of markup languages, scripting, and web map libraries, which are relevant in designing and publishing web maps;
  4. develop Web mapping applications for static and interactive web mapping systems in various platforms; and
  5. critically evaluate the performances and effectiveness of web-based GIS.
