Overview
This course focuses on developing knowledge for facilitating learning in clinical settings, for students, peers and other health professionals, and the development of peer networking, interdisciplinary team work, active learning and building support networks. It is therefore necessary for an educator to have a good understanding of education theory and how it is impacted by the environment and be able to plan authentic learning experience within the environment. This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to enable them to facilitate learning with colleagues and students within the healthcare setting. Completion of this course will provide a firm foundation for supporting learning in health care settings.
The course builds foundational knowledge of the core elements for promoting active learner-centred learning in the clinical setting, including assessment of learning and addresses communication aspects of interprofessional education including communication, peer support principles, creating positive environments and networking.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Participate as a member of a community of collaborative, clinical educators;
- Identify and analyse variables in the clinical environment that influence teaching and learning situations;
- Critically analyse, the contribution current theories of learning and teaching make to learner-centred learning in clinical education;
- Formulate and implement strategies for promoting learner-centred learning in the clinical environment;
- Develop and Implement appropriate assessment tasks, provide meaningful feedback and review relevant evaluation tools;
- Apply clinical facilitation skills to support learner-centred learning;
- Critically reflect on and evaluate their role as a clinical educator.
