Overview
Industry is more technology driven and reliant on emerging technologies such as CAD/CAM, 3D Printing, laser cutting, etc. The technology used is changing rapidly and this course is designed to provide Industrial Technology and Design teachers with the knowledge and skills required to engage with 21st Century students. This technology is utilised not only in industry, but in a range of other applications such as medical, dental, and other scientific endeavours. The course also addresses other emerging technology applications such Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Robotics and Electronics.
This course provides opportunities for pre-service teachers to develop the ability to utilise CAD software to create digital models which can be uploaded to prototyping and modelling equipment commonly used in schools such as 3D printers, laser cutters and other CAM technologies. Some coding and robotics are included in this area, as well as a requisite knowledge of electronics components and circuitry which underpins the understanding of modern technology. The course will also focus on the basic maintenance requirements of commonly used equipment such as 3D printers and laser cutters.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- design 2D & 3D digital models using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software;
- select the most suitable materials for use with the emerging technologies;
- make decisions regarding safe use of emerging technologies in the design classroom;
- produce prototypes or models using emerging technologies;
- produce architectural plans using software specific for a defined purpose;
- use basic coding software to program and control robots;
- understand the role of micro-electronic components in basic electronic circuitry;
- understand the role of electronic circuitry in the design and creation of beneficial products and their application in authentic contexts.

• Students will need a computer that meets the minimum specifications to run the required software ( - (highly recommended 3 button mouse).
• Students will need consistent and quality access to the internet in order to maintain access to the course materials and online workshops.
Student workload expectations
To do well in this subject, students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week including class contact hours, independent study, and all assessment tasks. If you are undertaking additional activities, which may include placements and residential schools, the weekly workload hours may vary.
