Overview
Organisations in the 21st century face the ever increasing forces of a globalised economy. This brings with it continual change and competitive challenges. Organisations must adopt effective strategies in the deployment of its resources to achieve sustained higher-than-average returns in a globalised world that is more often complex, uncertain and difficult to predict. The importance of business strategy in developing organisational capabilities should not be undervalued as globalisation and the technological revolution have created a new environment with both challenges and opportunities.
This course provides both a traditional and contemporary study of business strategy by using important traditional analytic tools in the analysis of organisations facing the modern-day challenges of a globalised world. Much of this course will focus on decision making from a strategic management viewpoint and students will develop skills to use a systematic approach to conducting environmental analyses, strategy formulation, strategy implementation and strategy evaluation. The study of business strategy should be seen as the capstone of a professional business education. Since this is an integrative course which draws on prior subject areas, it is advisable that students complete this course in the final year of their study.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- examine the literature concerning the external and internal environmental factors to formulate business strategy at multiple levels consistent with organisational vision and mission;
- critically analyse a business strategy with the view to providing advice to an interested stakeholder on the strategy's value towards influencing longer term competitive advantage;
- appraise strategic control mechanisms utilised in the governance and management of organisations;
- work independently to research, examine and evaluate ideas from a variety of sources for the purpose of creating a project to fulfil the requirements of a written assignment.
