Overview
This course explores cutting edge developments in team leadership, enabling participants to confidently lead any team they are likely to encounter in modern organisations to successful outcomes. Team-based structures are becoming more common as traditional hierarchical organisations are transitioning to flatter structures to allow more flexibility in perspectives and decision-making. Modern teams can be made up of peers or subordinates, with a diverse range of people, personalities, functions and capabilities, and can be in-house, global or virtual. Subsequently team leadership is an essential skill for managers at all levels of an organisation. Recent research suggests that future leaders will require a broader skillset than previously expected. Inspiring leaders require 鈥渟oft鈥 skills that develop trust in not just the team but the organisation, responsibility for their own work and that of their team, a shared understanding of how their work and the work of the team fits in to the greater goals of the business and an overall positive team climate that leads to better collaboration, communication and problem-solving. This course takes an innovative approach to developing the team leadership skills required by examining team leadership theory alongside contemporary issues, case studies and application exercises.
This course accordingly seeks to answer some fundamental questions:
1) What does it take to be an inspirational team leader?
2) How does the type of team, its structure and content, impact on team leadership?
3) What can you do to develop your team leadership skills in order to lead all types of teams to successful outcomes?
This course critically examines the changing nature of teams within organisations through past and present perspectives on team leadership. The course pays specific attention to leading diverse and cross-functional teams addressing the specific complexities and challenges of these through critical review, activities and case studies. More contemporary issues such as the emergence of virtual teams and shared leadership allows participants to challenge their thinking and anticipate future leadership trends. This course takes an innovate approach to developing and assessing participants' overall team leadership skills through the lens of the "soft" skills that lead to improved collaboration, communication and problem-solving. As these "soft" skills are not as readily apparent or measurable as other more technical skills, participants gain not only skills but also credentials to support their leadership goals. It is envisaged that this approach to the team will augment other leadership approaches offered across the program of study.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- acquire cognitive knowledge of past and present team leadership theories and practice;
- critically review the team leadership theories that help build successful teams in a variety of contexts;
- reflect on your own experiences in teams in relation to the leadership techniques examined;
- communicate the value of team leadership skills within a given context;
- apply a range of team leadership skills to real world problems.
