Overview
Essential elements in the development of a contemporary musician are aural awareness and both a working knowledge of, and practical skills in the techniques of music analysis and the principles and practice of improvised performance. This course provides the student with important music skills that supplement Music Practice courses.
This course provides further practical instruction in the use of the vocabulary and language of contemporary music to create improvised musical artefacts. It further develops knowledge, understanding and aural acuity of pitch, melody and rhythm by applying these skills to improvisation.
Course learning outcomes
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- apply the fundamental principles, techniques and concepts of harmonic analysis to the practice of improvisation;
- show further developed aural skills, including the ability to research, observe and analyse music in a variety of contexts;
- use their prior experiences to work collaboratively within different musical contexts;
- interpret and explore the practices, languages, forms, materials, technologies and techniques of improvised musical performance.
