Overview
This first-year foundation course introduces students to nursing theory and the fundamental concepts of providing basic patient-centred care across the lifespan. Learning centres of the importance of providing care that is safe, effective and evidence based. The knowledge and skills developed in this course will be built upon in other courses throughout the remainder of the program, which assists students to become employable and qualified Registered Nurses.
In this course, students are introduced to beginning theory and clinical skills. Through a range of learning opportunities and activities including simulated nursing laboratories, students learn and practice the basic principles of: infection prevention and control; holistic nursing assessments including vital signs; basic wound care; safe nursing care to support activities of daily living; professional communication and manual handling within normal parameters.
This course consists of a mandatory residential school for external students and mandatory laboratories for on-campus students.
As per the BNSG Program Rules, students are required to attempt and submit all assessment items in a course. This program rule forms part of the USQ accreditation agreement with the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Council [ANMAC].
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Recall and apply knowledge and skills necessary to perform basic health assessments across the lifespan and relevant clinical skills.
- Accurately perform basic numeracy and maths calculations.
- Reflect on self-performance when conducting basic nursing assessments and performing clinical skills within the principles of caring practice.
- Identify and recall principles of person-centred care, infection prevention and control, manual handling.
- Communicate effectively in a simulated clinical environment.
