Overview

NUR1102 Literacies and Communication for Health Care is one of eight, first year, foundation courses in the Bachelor of Nursing program. Students enrol in this first-year course in their first semester as it introduces communication and academic skills that underpin student success and shape professional identity.
Registered Nurses engage in therapeutic communication with individuals, families and inter-professional colleagues in a myriad of dynamic healthcare contexts. This communication often occurs in intimate and stressful situations that challenge the equilibrium and resilience for all involved. This requires the development of self-awareness, self-care, empathy and communication skills that contribute towards achieving therapeutic communication for optimal patient outcomes.
The significance of effective communication for inter-professional communications with individuals and groups is essential in its contribution towards patient safety and quality in nursing practice, as governed by the Professional Standards of Practice in Australia. Students develop their communication skills in academic, digital and health care literacies to support contemporary professional practice for the delivery of safe and quality nursing care.

As per the BNSG Program Rules, students are required to attempt and submit all assessment items in a course. This program rule forms part of the USQ accreditation agreement with the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Council [ANMAC].

This course will introduce communication concepts and frameworks relevant to healthcare and prepare students for engaging in effective communication for a variety of clinical and professional situations. Students will develop their capacity to communicate with individuals and families in the delivery of both therapeutic communication as well as effective communication that achieves safe and quality nursing care, underpinned by evidence-based practice and the nursing standards of professional practice in Australia. Learning activities within this course will assist in equipping students with self-awareness and cultural awareness for their development of cultural safety, essential for safe and quality care for nursing care. Students will also develop foundational communication skills for inter-professional communications, both verbally and written, for effective communications and collaborations in patient care. Students will build understanding of the essential skills that achieve academic literacy and digital literacies, essential for the succession throughout the BNSG program and also prepares them for their introduction to digital health in preparation for professional practice.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Apply a range of communication concepts/tools, including therapeutic communication, and skills essential to safe and effective care with diverse population groups across the lifespan.
  2. Identify and articulate the factors that contribute to effective and ineffective interpersonal and inter-professional communication.
  3. Recognise that inclusion of health research and best available evidence for professional judgements and care decision-making is communicated inter-professionally, in alignment with the professional standards of nursing practice.
  4. Identify, locate and retrieve scholarly information to support/justify arguments.
  5. Identify and explain strategies that promote resilience, self-care and cultural safety for interpersonal communications.
  6. Identify and utilise a digital platform to build a professional portfolio.
