Overview

Registered nurses require effective clinical reasoning, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities and competent clinical skills to work within dynamic interdisciplinary teams in the management of individuals experiencing complex acute health concerns to ensure optimal patient outcomes. This theory-based course, utilising clinical case studies, will enable students to advance their clinical reasoning, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to work within dynamic interdisciplinary care teams in the management of individuals experiencing complex acute health needs.

As per the BNSG Program Rules, students are required to attempt and submit all assessment items in a course. This program rule forms part of the USQ accreditation agreement with the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Council [ANMAC].

In this course an inquiry-based framework will ensure that students can consolidate, apply and integrate previous learnings of anatomy and pathophysiology, health assessment, diagnostics, pharmacology and management of individuals with complex acute health conditions in high acuity health care settings. Students will examine complex conditions across the lifespan and will apply critical thinking, clinical reasoning and reflective practice skills to person centred, evidence-based nursing care. In this course students will integrate and apply principles of effective collaborative interprofessional communication, teamwork, as well as ethical and legal practice in decision making to integrate person-centred care that meets the requirements for beginning Registered Nurse practice.

This course includes a mandatory 2-day residential School.

Course learning outcomes

On completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Apply and integrate knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology, pharmacology, and diagnostics to case studies of individuals with emergent and complex health conditions in high acuity health care settings.
  2. Apply and integrate previous learnings of health assessment and nursing management to individuals with complex health conditions in high acuity health care settings.
  3. Apply critical thinking, clinical reasoning and reflective practice skills to a range of complex acute conditions across the lifespan to demonstrate appropriate person centred, evidence-based nursing care.
  4. Evaluate the nurse鈥檚 role within the inter-professional and intra-professional team in regard to effective communication and teamwork in decision making practices within high acuity clinical case studies.
  5. Apply ethical and legal practice frameworks, standards and decision making required of a beginning Registered Nurse to acute high acuity case studies for safe person-centred care.

Student workload expectations
