Overview

Undergraduate nursing students need to link theory to practice. This course specifically relates to translating the knowledge covered in the mental health theory course into practice. Additionally, this course enables students to integrate more theoretical knowledge from across the program into practice whilst caring for individuals across the lifespan with mental health illnesses and conditions. Students will be able to apply the and develop the clinical skills of a Registered Nurse in accordance with the NMBA standards across a range of clinical settings managing the mental health priorities of individuals and communities in a variety of clinical settings.

The assessment in this course is competency-based. Students will achieve either a pass or fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course. These competency items form part of the USQ accreditation agreement with the accrediting organisation/s (where relevant).

In this placement course students are allocated to a mental health clinical setting and undertake 120 hours of professional experience. Students will further develop professional interactions, therapeutic relationships and nursing care practices associated with caring for individuals, families and significant others in mental health practice settings. The mental health needs of inpatients, groups requiring a specialised approach such as child and youth, older people, people from rural and isolated areas, Indigenous and culturally diverse populations and the homeless maybe experienced. Students will further develop critical thinking and clinical decision making within these types of clinical environments. Students are required to be reflective about their clinical practice experiences for both their professional development and lifelong learning journey. To enhance employability there is a focus on the continued formation and maintenance of students' professional nursing identity. The placement experience builds industry-specific knowledge and know-how of acute and non-acute environments. It includes opportunities to build industry networks and consider career pathways.

Course learning outcomes

On completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate developing competency with NMBA standards of practice under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  2. Deliver care that demonstrates awareness of an individual's unique values, beliefs, customs and culture which provide the framework for that individual's experience of health, illness, or death.
  3. Utilise systematic data collection, clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice to critically analyse events and intervene appropriately to plan, implement and evaluate safe and appropriate nursing care, including patient and family education in mental health clinical practice.
  4. Critically reflect on personal and community attitudes to people with a mental illness, incorporating mental health promotion and recovery principles in clinical practice.
  5. Explore and apply legal and ethical issues in caring for people with a mental illness, including documentation and therapeutic communications.
  6. Analyse events and to intervene appropriately within interprofessional teams to plan, implement and evaluate safe and appropriate care for individuals with mental health disorders, and related symptomatology.
