Overview
Living and working in rural and remote locations as a health professional offers unique personal and work experiences. Rural and remote nursing practice is another opportunity to explore the diverse exciting elements of the profession. Professional practice in rural and remote settings throughout Australia promotes the delivery of care and health experience across the lifespan. Governments on a State and National level support the development of professional practice and career building for nurses, midwives and allied health students, where communities are in need of vital health services. Final year students in the Bachelor of Nursing, can practice in a rural and remote environment for opportunities to demonstrate competence in all elements of clinical practice and apply more complex skills of a rural and remote Registered Nurse in accordance with the NMBA standards of practice.
The assessment in this course is competency-based. Students will achieve either a pass or fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course. These competency items form part of the USQ accreditation agreement with the accrediting organisation/s (where relevant).

This final transition to practice placement course, is an elective, optional for final year students who can demonstrate a desire and commitment to be a rural and remote health practitioner. This will be undertaken in a rural and remote location in Queensland or in some instances, other states in Australia. In this 2-credit point elective course students will have the opportunity to be allocated to a rural or remote clinical setting of their choice and undertake 320 hours of professional experience placement. Students may experience and engage in professional practice in highly specialised areas of complex health care experienced by individuals and groups in rural and remote communities. The main themes of this course include: more practice of advanced skills and implementation of knowledge for individuals across the lifespan with acute and complex medical or surgical conditions. Other themes include advancements related to therapeutic communication skills, assessment skills, collaborative practice with the interprofessional team, education of individuals and families, critical thinking skills, medication preparation and administration, clinical reflection, and the ability to plan and prioritise patient centred care independently. To enhance employability there is a focus on the critical capabilities and transferable skills developed through this course that can be deployed in any clinical context. The aim is for students to develop industry-specific knowledge and know-how to effectively manage nursing care within multiple healthcare contexts. Professional identity formation, and maintenance is enhanced through the clinical placement experience. The focus is on developing knowledge, skills, attributes, reflective disposition and identity that graduates need to succeed in the workforce.
