Overview
To practise with a level of expertise required by a Clinical psychologist, psychologists must be able to understand and critically apply psychological models and practice to specific fields. This practicum builds on the generalist skills and knowledge acquired in earlier practicum courses to develop skills specific to the area of Clinical Psychology. It is anticipated that students will be capable of more independent work at this stage in their training and will self-manage the mandatory requirements for practice and supervision log books and placement reviews.
The assessment in this course is competency-based. Students will achieve either a pass or fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course. These competency items form part of the USQ accreditation agreement with the accrediting organisation/s (where relevant).
This practicum course provides students with a structured situation in which to develop knowledge and skills within the Clinical psychology field. The level of independent practice and the application to specialist areas challenges the student to broaden and diversify beyond their responsibilities in the first placement.
Course learning outcomes
At the end of the practicum, students will be able to demonstrate identified competencies: such as case formulation, assessment, intervention, service implementation, professional legal and ethical principles, communication and professional and community relations in a clinical context. Actual content of the Practicum will include skills as identified in the respective Clinical College Competency standards (MPCL or DPCL) and Psychology Board of Australia registration competencies (MPPS). Specifically students will be able to:
- Apply case formulation, assessment, intervention, service implementation, professional legal and ethical principles, communication and professional and community relations to the Clinical Psychology context;
- Conduct high quality intake interviews;
- Formulate effective questions to guide further assessment and intervention;
- Conduct and evaluate assessment and intervention;
- Apply a working knowledge of the role of psychological interventions within an interprofessional context;
- construct and present case reports in oral and written formats;
- conduct insightful self-analysis of clinical intervention expertise.

Student workload expectations
To do well in this subject, students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week including class contact hours, independent study, and all assessment tasks. If you are undertaking additional activities, which may include placements and residential schools, the weekly workload hours may vary.
