Pre-requisite: SES3202 and (SES3299 or SES3399) and Students must be enrolled in the following Program: BSEH
Overview
This course is a requirement of the professional accreditation with Exercise and Sports Science Australia for clinical exercise physiology. During this course students will complete at least 180 professional placement hours, which may include 20 hours delivered as simulated learning activities (simulation modules).
Note that some professional placement will be required on campus at Ipswich, and some professional placement may be undertaken at other sites, which may be a considerable distance from any USQ campus. All students will be required to complete placements at more than one location. Some placement locations may be rural or remote.
This course will provide students with an opportunity to undertake 180 hours of clinical professional work experience within the clinical exercise physiology scope of practice. Every student's work experience will be supervised by an Exercise and Sports Science Australia Accredited Exercise Physiologist, a university-trained allied health professional (e.g. registered physiotherapist) or an exercise scientist with appropriate experience working with clients with chronic disease. Clinical work experience is intended to provide students with opportunities to develop skills and knowledge in clinical exercise physiology to enhance their professional development and potential ability.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Competently apply clinical exercise physiology knowledge and skills in work contexts, specifically related to risk management, exercise intervention, functional conditioning and occupational rehabilitation.
- Compile relevant professional practice documentation, including clinical case records and reports as required by the placement sites.
- Engage in critical reflection of professional practice for ongoing improvement (in the area of clinical exercise physiology, including identification and referral of clients to relevant medical or allied health professionals).
- Present self professionally, and perform clinical exercise physiology work in a professional and ethical manner, while displaying evidence-based knowledge and skills appropriate for a novice practitioner, and integrating knowledge from other courses.
- Apply effective communication (verbal and nonverbal) skills in interactions with supervisors, colleagues, clients, and practitioners from other clinical disciplines.
