Requisites
Pre-requisite: SES3202 and (SES3299 or SES3399) and Students must be enrolled in the following Program: BSEH
Overview
This course is a requirement for professional accreditation with Exercise and Sports Science Australia for clinical exercise physiology. This course is the second clinical placement for exercise physiology students and builds on from knowledge and skills acquired in SES4199. During this course students will complete at least 180 hours of professional placement, which may include 20 hours delivered as simulated learning activities (simulation modules).
Note that some professional placement will be required on campus at Ipswich, and some professional placement may be undertaken at other sites, which may be a considerable distance from any USQ campus. All students will be required to complete placements at more than one location. Some placement locations may be rural or remote.
This course will provide students with an opportunity to undertake 180 hours of clinical professional work experience within the clinical exercise physiology scope of practice. Every student's work experience will be supervised by an Exercise and Sport Science Australia Accredited Exercise Physiologist, a university-trained allied health professional (e.g., registered physiotherapist), or an exercise scientist with appropriate experience working with clients with chronic disease. Clinical work experience is intended to provide students with opportunities to develop skills and knowledge in clinical exercise physiology to enhance their professional development and potential ability.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Competently apply clinical exercise physiology knowledge and skills to the design, delivery and modification of safe and effective exercise interventions for individuals with neurological, cancer, mental health, and renal conditions, giving due attention to risk management.
- Compile, interpret and integrate relevant professional practice documentation, including clinical case records and reports as required by the placement sites
- Utilise high-level critical reflection skills during professional practice to identify areas for ongoing professional improvement (in the area of clinical exercise physiology, including identification and referral of clients to relevant medical or allied health professionals).
- Present self professionally, and perform clinical exercise physiology work in a professional and ethical manner, while displaying comprehensive evidence-based knowledge and skills appropriate for an entry-level practitioner.
- Apply a range of high-level verbal and non-verbal skills to communicate effectively with a range of individuals, including supervisors, colleagues, clients and practitioners from other clinical disciplines
