Overview
Local Governments are subject to planning controls mainly imposed by State Governments. Planners require an understanding of how State and Federal Government policies and legislation impact on Local Government planning.
The course will cover the role of all levels of Australian Government in the planning system. It will examine the interaction of various Federal, State and Local Government policies and statutory controls.
Course learning outcomes
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Describe the system of government in Australia and how it impacts on statutory planning
- Explain the rights, obligations and responsibilities for planning that pertain to the three levels of Australian Government.
- Describe the requirements for undertaking environmental and social impact assessments as part of a development proposal.
- Interpret the provisions of regional plans.
- Apply relevant sections of legislation, instruments and state planning policies to development proposals.
- Apply and develop sections of a Local Government planning instrument.
- Work effectively and efficiently in a small team.
