Overview
In this first Management Accounting course, you are introduced to the operational management accounting tools and concepts that are used in businesses. The course focuses on the practical application and interpretation of management accounting techniques. This course also provides you with an understanding of how these tools support business practice and decision making to help develop job readiness as business graduates with an accounting major.
This course provides technical competency in the areas of planning, control, and decision making. The course facilitates an understanding of the management accounting function by exploring the creation and managing of organisational value. This course is a required technical and profession competency component of CPA and CAANZ accreditation and specifically addresses Technical Competency Area 7.
The operational management accounting tools and themes addressed in this course are used in businesses. The course focuses on providing you with introductory and developing levels for their competencies, skills, and knowledge in the practical application and interpretation of management accounting techniques. You may use this opportunity to understand how these tools support the business practice of planning, control, and decision making to be well-informed individuals and critical thinkers for decision making to help develop your employability as a business graduate with an accounting major.
Course learning outcomes
On completion of this course students should be able to:
- explain the role and purpose of management accounting, the types of organisational structures including concepts for authority delegation and control (TCA7 LO1 (a and c));
- apply appropriate quantitative techniques to use costing information for business planning and control (TCA7 LO3);
- prepare detailed budgets and forecasts for management purposes, demonstrating an understanding of the budgeting process and its role in the management of organisations (TCA7 LO2);
- apply the principles and procedures involved in analysing and managing an organisation鈥檚 cash flow (TCA7 LO4);
- analyse data and information to prepare reports that support management decision making (TCA7 LO6 (a));
- exercise judgement to provide possible solutions to routine accounting problems (ALS 1) (TCA7 LO6 (c) in relation to LO3 & LO6 (a));
- justify and communicate accounting advice and ideas in straightforward contexts to influence specialists and non-specialists (ALS 4) (TCA7 LO6 (c) in relation to LO3 & LO6 (a)).
