Agricultural and Environmental Engineers require a practical understanding of the operation of rural industries and the environmental constraints and impacts associated with the industries. This residential school will provide students with an introduction to natural resource and production management issues faced by a variety of rural enterprises. This will involve actively visiting industry and commercial sites on a four day field trip during which time students will not be on campus (accommodation on route).

In particular, commercial examples will be presented to highlight the physical, economic and social constraints to rural industry development, environmental issues associated with the industry development, the processes of land degradation, and the principles of property management planning and sustainable land management.

This course contains a mandatory residential school.

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of rural production systems in Australia;
2. describe the physical, economic and social constraints to commercial land use;
3. describe the major causes of land degradation and environmental concerns in rural Australia;
4. demonstrate an understanding of natural resource management issues and environmental impacts associated with commercial rural enterprises;
5. effectively communicate agricultural principles and practices by presenting oral and written reports;
6. undertake critical self-review and performance evaluation against course objectives as a primary means of tracking personal development needs and achievements;
7. demonstrate an appreciation of appropriate safety procedures and workplace health and safety requirements.
