Overview

The aviation industry is multi-faceted and reaches beyond the operation of aircraft. The industry is a complex socio-technical environment where safety, efficiency and sustainability are essential components for the future of air transport systems. However these three parameters often find themselves in competition in the current system. In order to be effective managers, future aviation professionals need to develop an appropriate understanding of the drivers and underpinning requirements of these components. This course responds to these dynamics and challenges by engaging students through the appropriate use of contemporary case studies.

This course will encourage you to investigate current aviation industry issues through the lenses of safety, efficiency and sustainability. You will work individually and in small teams to research and develop well-considered responses to the various challenges facing the industry. Due to its contemporary nature, by definition, this course will be dynamic and therefore the content will be informed by real-time issues. The course will place you in the role of manager in your future working environment, giving you experience in the appraisal and analysis of both tactical and strategic issues in order to develop appropriate solutions.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. apply critical thinking and research, identify key contemporary safety issues facing the aviation industry;
  2. work effectively in small teams to analyse, the contemporary economic efficiency issues facing the aviation industry;
  3. articulate an in-depth understanding of sustainability issues facing the aviation industry;
  4. communicate effectively using scholarly writing skills to report information.
