Overview
World aviation bodies and regulators have recognized the need for ongoing human factors training amongst safety critical personnel in the aviation industry. Within airlines this human factors training is largely done in-house by facilitators who have a background in human factors training or who are trained up with the skills and knowledge to accomplish this task. Providing a postgraduate qualification which provides a pathway for development of advanced knowledge in this field will be an attractive option for both facilitators and airlines.
This course provides the background of training and teaching techniques often used by in-house airline training departments in accordance with national and international regulatory guidance legislation. Concomitantly it expands students' understanding of adult learning concepts in order for students to develop better practices in human factors training. The course also provides instruction which will lead to a thorough understanding of human factors knowledge assessment and behavioural marker systems.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced knowledge of adult learning principles in an aviation human factors role;
- scope, plan and implement principles of effective teamwork, leadership and culture within an aviation context;
- communicate relevant concepts of information processing, effective communication, stress, fatigue and workload management within an aviation context;
- critically evaluate the key skills of situational awareness and effective decision making within an aviation context;
- examine the principles of behavioural marker assessment systems and effective threat and error management within an aviation context;
- critically apply their knowledge of human factors and non-technical skills to the development of an airline human factors training program.

Student workload expectations
To do well in this subject, students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week including class contact hours, independent study, and all assessment tasks. If you are undertaking additional activities, which may include placements and residential schools, the weekly workload hours may vary.
