Overview
This course builds on the fundamental laboratory methodology, data collection, analysis and presentation skills provided in BIO2120. The course will allow students to augment their laboratory experience and gain further training in fundamental and more advanced techniques associated with the biomedical sciences. Therefore, this course provides students with opportunities to extend their academic learning environment and create links to the professional world.
In some disciplines, students need to demonstrate competency before they can progress further in their studies. Competency involves the application skills and knowledge to a particular standard performance. Students need to pass all competency assessments in a course and reach a total passing of 50% to be awarded a passing grade. Competency Assessment Items are identified in the course specification.
This course provides students with an opportunity to obtain further advanced practical biomedical sciences skills necessary to support their activity in a working laboratory or research setting. Candidates will augment their specialised subject knowledge and academic skills with practical skills. This course will allow students to improve their learning by the application of the theoretical concepts and skills into a laboratory setting.
This course contains a mandatory 5-day residential school. Students must attend all 5 days of the residential school to pass the subject. Student non-compliance with the attendance requirement will mean the student cannot pass the course.
Course learning outcomes
On the completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Explain the mechanisms of action, therapeutic uses and major adverse effects for drugs used in the treatment of cardiovascular, neurological and endocrine diseases;
- Generate and critically analyse physiological data in the laboratory;
- Work safely, professionally and ethically in the laboratory;
- Use scientific and research writing conventions to compile a research report.

Student workload expectations
To do well in this subject, students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week including class contact hours, independent study, and all assessment tasks. If you are undertaking additional activities, which may include placements and residential schools, the weekly workload hours may vary.
