Overview

The discipline of information systems is constantly changing at fast pace. The need to find solutions to everyday problems and develop innovative technologies and systems is paramount to building a sustainable future. This often requires systematic and rigorous research to enable evidence-based decision making. The understanding of the research process and the application of research techniques is therefore essential skills for IT professionals to possess as organisational and business requirements become increasingly complex.

This course is designed as an introduction to applied research for information systems professionals. Students cover the fundamentals of research relating to management information systems, and investigate, synthesise and communicate information to inform management information systems decisions. The course is designed to build foundation skills for students to successfully conduct applied information systems research that employs both quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. perform literature review and identify gaps in the literature;
  2. evaluate strategies for the solution of applied research problems in information systems
  3. structure and develop research plans using applied research methods;
  4. apply the principles of research ethics in all research activities;
  5. interact and collaborate effectively in teams;
  6. synthesise and communicate information systems research information effectively in written and verbal communication.
