Overview

This course aims to give the undergraduate a working knowledge of the methods and techniques commonly used in civil engineering construction.

This course covers the preliminary works and site establishment activities associated with commencing a construction job. It also deals with foundations and soil stabilisation techniques, the production and use of common construction materials and discusses some elements associated with the construction of major infrastructure facilities.

Course learning outcomes

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. determine the infrastructure requirements for a construction job and apply a knowledge of the job establishment process;
  2. explain and apply the basic methods of foundation construction and soil stabilisation;
  3. differentiate the main elements involved in timber, steel and concrete structures;
  4. select and justify appropriate protective treatments for different structures and explain the various treatment processes involved;
  5. evaluate and differentiate between the commonly used methods and techniques for the construction of selected major infrastructure facilities.
