Overview

Components and structures manufactured from fibre reinforced polymer composites are used increasingly in a variety of industries. Composite materials have many desirable properties over conventional metallic materials including high corrosion resistance, high strength to weight ratio, and they can easily be optimised to suit any applied load. Moreover, composites are durable materials which are important in attaining a more sustainable and almost maintenance free infrastructure. However, there is still a lack of practicing engineers who are trained to design and use fibre composite materials.

This course provides students with advanced knowledge of the governing principles of composites, characterization, performance and other technical aspects of practical importance relating to the design and use of fibre composites in various engineering applications.

Course learning outcomes

  1. Research and communicate the recent advances in composite materials, constituent materials of composites, and composite manufacturing processes;
  2. Evaluate the mechanical properties of composite materials;
  3. Analyse the properties of orthotropic lamina and laminates;
  4. Examine failure mechanics and predict the strength and the fatigue life of composite materials;
  5. Identify and compare experimental techniques used for composite property evaluation and damage inspections;
  6. Identify and design composite materials and structures in various engineering applications.
