Overview

There is a need for introductory studies to prepare students for the demands of both higher education and the professional workplace. Competent literacy, numeracy and e-literacy skills are all required, as is an ability to effectively manage the complex life/work balance. Success in higher education requires students to take control of and effectively manage their own learning and to develop skills in organising, analysing and drawing conclusions from a broad range of information. This course provides the core study management strategies and learning skills that students need to acquire in order to successfully undertake higher education study. A particular emphasis is placed on the development of critical thinking, and on building in the student a strong understanding of the academic culture and of what is expected of students in university learning. The course ensures that students develop the skills and attitudes necessary to secure effective learning development.

This course introduces the scope, purpose and strategies associated with effective study and learning with particular application to academic and professional settings.
Students progress through a program which requires them to manage their own learning through a process of self-development. Effective study strategies and attitudes will be developed and applied to areas of professional studies to prepare the student for successful management of higher education study more broadly. Students will also develop the skill of critical thinking - an essential skill of higher education scholarship and a foundation for academic culture. The course provides a comprehensive introduction to critical thinking theory and practice, exploring issues including critical thinking and university culture, critical reading, critical analysis and critical writing.
