Overview

This course provides an opportunity for students to gain practical experience with equipment and concepts associated with higher level electrical, electronic and computer systems courses. At the same time the course provides room to practice transferable skills such as teamwork and problem-solving skills.

The assessment in this course is competency-based. Students will achieve either a pass or fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course. These competency items form part of the UniSQ accreditation agreement with the accrediting organisation/s (where relevant).

This is the final technical practice course for Bachelor of Engineering students majoring in Electrical and Electronic or Computer Systems Engineering. This course provides experimental work and project work in the areas of automatic electronic test equipment, applied control, computer systems, networking, Internet of Things and VoIP systems. The principle objectives are to allow the student to develop knowledge of techniques, apply theory and interact with phenomena in real situations, and further develop problem identification and solution skills together with a capacity for self-learning. A significant proportion of the course is devoted to group based project work.

This course contains a mandatory residential school for external students and mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes for on-campus students.

Course learning outcomes

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. evaluate a broad range of design criteria for typical electrical or electronic products;
  2. co-operate in a team environment to achieve objectives in a given timeframe;
  3. communicate results effectively to peers and prepare written reports;
  4. engage in informed discussions about equipment, activity design, experiment execution and results;
  5. devise, implement and evaluate test procedures on electronic devices using a graphical; programming language such as Labview, and automatic test equipment;
  6. design and test simple Internet of Things applications and evaluate their performance;
  7. design, implement and evaluate scripts to enable simple control tasks;
  8. to compile, install and configure VoIP PABX software under Linux to demonstrate the operation of a telephone system.
