Overview
The Australian Curriculum: English consists of the three interrelated stands of Language, Literature and Literacy. Teachers of language need to have an understanding of grammar. Teachers of literature need to have an understanding of the historical, social and cultural perspective of literary traditions. Teachers of literacy need to understand learners bring different prior knowledge, including their cultural and social backgrounds and prior literacy experiences to their learning at schools.
This course will explore the Australian Curriculum: English strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. The course will examine how literature can be used to enrich the educational experience of learners. Students will explore how cultural and social backgrounds and prior literacy experiences can influence learning. Strategies for introducing learners to many literary genres and formats will be investigated. Opportunities to identify literary devices, language and image resources used in literature to represent meaning will be provided.
Course learning outcomes
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course in accordance with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership鈥檚 (AITSL) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST). On completion of this course students should be able to:
- explain factors including cultural and social backgrounds and prior literacy experience influence literacy learning consolidate knowledge of language and image meaning making resources for teaching the Australian Curriculum (APST 1.2, 3.3);
- devise a literary pathway to demonstrate an understanding of the many genres and formats in children's literature and analyse the literary devices used in literature (APST 2.1);
- explain how grammar meaning resources and literature can be used in rich literacy classrooms to embed the General Capabilities in teaching and learning (APST 2.5, 2.6);
- select, embed and apply meaning making resources to analyse language and visual features represented in a text to connect English with other primary learning (APST 3.4);
- demonstrate appropriate cognitive, literacy and communication skills, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and APA referencing.

To do well in this subject, students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week including class contact hours, independent study, and all assessment tasks.
