Overview

The course is the second of four Allied Health courses that fosters the development of skills and knowledge and covers core elements of Allied Health Assistance practice. This course will provide students with an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the human body. This knowledge is essential to assess and promote health. The course helps prepare the students to safely practice in both health professional student (on placement) and graduate contexts.

In this course students will be introduced to the basic structure and functions of the body systems and associated components. They will apply this knowledge to obtain and interpret information about client health status and to check a client's physical health. Furthermore, students will learn how to understand and respond to instructions; to carry out routine tasks and communicate with a range of internal/external clients in a medical environment; as well as use appropriate medical terminology.

This course will utilise a mixture of online learning, practical sessions, laboratory sessions, and tutorials. Students will be expected to attend all practical classes,tutorials and laboratory sessions.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Respond appropriately to instructions containing medical terminology
  2. Use appropriate medical terminology in written and oral communication
  3. Receive delegation and gather information from an allied health professional
  4. Confirm a person鈥檚 health status based on obtained information
  5. Recognise variations from normal health status
  6. Prepare for and assist a person with movement
