Overview
Proficient professional care that facilitates the integration of evidence based practices and the foundations of contemporary knowledge are needed to ensure exemplary models of care are implemented for people with dementia. An essential component of care is the clinical expertise of professionals that ensures the understanding and appreciation of the complexities of dementia: facilitating a continuum of holistic person-centred care.
This course provides a collaborative learning environment that enables students to further develop their current knowledge and understanding of dementia.as the condition progresses. Through a strong theoretical base learning will challenge and cultivate higher thinking processes that are required to manage and support people with dementia. The course encompasses a critical reflection of current research and review of relevant literature pertaining to dementia care. Throughout the learning the knowledge components of the unit of study are balanced with practical inferences and strategies that are attuned to the current health environment and have a multidisciplinary approach incorporating the support and inclusion of the client's family/significant other. It is perceived that through a balance of knowledge and skill reflection and development that the student will gain both confidence as well as advanced practical skills in their ongoing practice areas.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Apply comprehensive knowledge of the biological basis and associated pathophysiological changes aligning with the complex spectrum of Alzheimer鈥檚 and dementia types;
- Implement reflective models of practice and critical analysis aligned to research and practice developments associated with dementia and behaviour changes;
- Critically evaluate the person-centred care practices required for people with dementia, to promote quality of life, meeting of cultural beliefs and individual values;
- Appraise therapeutic approaches in the assessment and management of the psychosocial issues and behaviour changes;
- Critically appraise collaborative care planning practices that are reflective of a multidisciplinary team approach to dementia care;
- Critique clinical governance and legislative requirements associated with the provision of dementia care;
- Evaluate and plan the supportive care needs of carers of people with dementia.
